Telecom and Internet

Philcom Operators

2002: Five digital, landline companies serve as of March 2000, providing direct dialing services for national and international calls. Three companies -- PHILCOM, MISORTEL and ITALTEL -- have interconnected.
Phone lines and communication firms

Phone density is 10 lines per 100 persons. Additional 50,000 lines will be installed over the next two years. The city and nearby municipalities are also being served by cell phone companies: Sun, Smart, Globe and other companies. An online phone directory made in 2001 is available.

2008: A local company, Parasat, provides satellite TV and broadband connection. Smartbro and Globe Telecom have wireless Internet service.

Webmaster's commentJanuary 30, 2010: Investigation conducted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) reveals that the P49-million barangay telephone project was carried out by a bogus contractor and is non-functional.

Webmaster's commentMarch 26, 2009: A private "wireless landline" network has poor service. Bill delivery is slow or doesn't arrive at all. Webmaster paid the bill on March 25, 2009 and the next day, the company cut off the connection.

Webmaster's comment July 2007: One might need a magnifying glass to use the Misamis Oriental phone directory. The texts are tiny and difficult to read.

Webmaster's comment July 2006: Phone audio quality is good, but cross-network connection still needs improvement. Using a phone of one company (e.g. MISORTEL) to call one of another company (e.g. PHILCOM) may not work during office hours.

Power

2008: The National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) is the Philippine government entity that operates the power grid of the nation.

TransCo operates two major generators in Mindanao -- the Agus River Hydroelectic Plant in Iligan City and the Pulangi IV Hydroelectric Plant in Bukidnon. TransCo distributes the energy from these to the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO). Power consumption

CEPALCO then supplies electricity to industrial, commercial and residential consumers in Cagayan de Oro and some areas in Misamis Oriental, like Tagoloan, Jasaan and Villanueva.

The city also benefits from non-hydro sources:

  • Mindanao Energy Systems (MINERGY), a diesel plant with a total capacity of 18.90 MW. It is a subsidiary of CEPALCO.

  • The 1-MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) plant in Indahag, which is connected to the 7-MW Bubunawan Power Company (BPC) Run-of-River Hydropower in Baungon, Bukidnon -- together the first PV-Hydro tandem project in the world.

  • The US$350-million, 210-MW coal-fired power project of STEAG State Power Incorporated (SPI) at the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate, supplying 15 percent of the power need of Mindanao.

Water

2002: Distributed by Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD), taking from wells and springs.Water consumption

Webmaster's comment July 2007: Water quality is uncertain. Most people, if they can afford the price, buy bottles of filtered water from numerous small shops. But some doctors still recommend boiling.

Transportation

Highway

2003: Several private firms operate taxicabs and public utility jeepneys. Some also rent cars and offer trucking and hauling services. Due to rising demand, the number of vehicles is increasing. Motor vehicles

comment May 2008: In about two hours, one could get a laminated driver's license at a one-stop office in Limketkai Center.

comment February 2008: Traffic jams and air pollution are major concerns in commercial areas. Crossing the highways is dangerous because some drivers cut corners and shift lanes abruptly. The glass windows of many private cars are tinted, decreasing visibility at night. Large billboards divert drivers' attention and engulf the smaller road signs. During fiesta, Christmas and New Year revelries, drunks totter precariously along the streets. People may throw firecrackers at vehicles. Drivers of motorcycles wear helmets but their passengers, some of them children and women, usually don't.

Webmaster's comment January 2008: Cagayan de Oro is famous and much admired for having several taxi companies using Toyota Corolla Altis. Altis taxi cabs are not found in Davao, Cebu and Manila.
